Holidaying amongst the Coffee Beans

Coffee doesn’t only taste great – in its natural habitat, it also looks fantastic, according to the Nicaraguan government.

The nation’s tourism minister has officially launched the Coffee Route in northern Nicaragua. The route cuts through picturesque coffee plantations and village areas where locals live in comparative isolation. The government aims to invest in developing specific ethnic, ecological, adventure and educational tourism sites in the region to lure foreign visitors.

Small and medium tour operators are also receiving training, including in coffee production techniques and the history of the region.

The government hopes that tourism will provide a strong supplement to the region’s income from coffee bean production.

Granada is a great place to be. The town is very colonial, very clean and in some respects very quiet. Some people come for a week and stay for years. I have been here for 2 weeks already. It is a place where nothing and everything happens. The Hospedaje Central sets the pace - laid back, good people and good times. New Years came in noisy and hot. There were parties in several places but Central was the best. Everybody just hung out at the sidewalk Cafe in front of the Central. Ironically, that’s what we did most days playing dominoes, drinking coffee and chatting with the international travelers.
